Many people in Spring Branch think all dental cleanings are the same, but they’re not. The type of cleaning you need depends on the health of your gums.

Regular Cleaning (Prophylaxis)

At Logos Dental, we recommend regular cleaning for patients with healthy gums or mild gingivitis.

During your appointment, we:

  • Remove plaque and tartar from the surfaces of your teeth above the gumline.
  • Polish your teeth to remove surface stains.
  • Help keep your teeth and gums healthy and prevent future problems.

Most patients in Spring Branch benefit from a regular cleaning every 6 months, although some may need it more or less often based on their individual needs.

Deep Cleaning (Scaling & Root Planing)

A deep cleaning is recommended when gum disease (periodontitis) is present.

When bacteria and tartar collect below the gumline, they can cause the gums to pull away from the teeth, forming deep pockets. Left untreated, this can lead to bone loss, loose teeth, and eventually tooth loss.

During a deep cleaning, we:

  • Remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria from below the gumline.
  • Smooth the root surfaces to help the gums reattach to the teeth.
  • Usually numb the area to keep you comfortable.
  • Often treat one or two sections of the mouth at a time, depending on the extent of the disease.

Why Not Just Get a Regular Cleaning?

A regular cleaning is designed to maintain healthy gums. It is not intended to treat gum disease. If tartar is trapped deep below the gums, a regular cleaning cannot safely or effectively remove it.

How Do We Know Which One You Need?

Your dentist and hygienist will perform a comprehensive exam, including measuring the spaces (pockets) between your teeth and gums and evaluating X-rays when needed. Based on these findings, we’ll recommend the treatment that’s best for your oral health.

Radiograph showing heavy tartar deposits
X-ray showing calculus buildup on root surfaces

These examples show radiographs with heavy calculus (tartar) buildup, much of which appears as radiopaque (light-colored) ledges or spurs attached to the root surfaces. While X-rays do not show all calculus, they can reveal moderate to heavy deposits, especially between teeth and below the gumline.

Not all tartar is visible on an X-ray. Dentists also use a periodontal exam (measuring the gum pockets), attachment loss, clinical examination, and your symptoms to determine whether a deep cleaning is needed. X-rays are just one part of the diagnosis.

The goal isn’t just clean teeth, it’s healthy gums. Early treatment can help prevent tooth loss and keep your smile healthy for years to come.
